About the Topic

ASP-Boston hosts a monthly morning session on the first Tuesday of the month.

Consumers rarely if ever purchase cars or trucks without taking them for a test drive first. Regrettably, businesses seldom subject critical strategies and investments to thorough "test drives". This failure (or inability) to adequately envisage what it will be like to live with a proposed decision is a root cause of the celebrated Law of Unintended Consequences. Recent examples of bad decisions drove the 2008 financial crisis, and numerous failed acquisitions (e.g., of TimeWarner by AOL).

This presentation will explain how organizations can make (and execute) critical decisions more effectively by combining scenario planning with "what-if" simulations. This method offers superior insight into the future, by enabling businesses to practice decisions safely, and learn from virtual rather than real mistakes. It reduces risk and increases confidence and consistency of key decisions. This approach will be illustrated using decision support examples such as competitive marketing strategy and enabling transformational organizational change.

Speaker

Dr. Richard Adler
President, DecisionPath, Inc.

Dr. Richard Adler is the President and Chief Architect at DecisionPath, Inc. He developed the company’s ForeTell decision support software platform. ForeTell solutions enable organizations to "test-drive”, validate, and refine critical decisions prior to rolling them out. This process improves decision-making by providing a low risk environment for practicing decisions and learning from virtual rather than real mistakes. Dr. Adler currently directs development of ForeTell-based decision support solutions for government, life sciences, and financial service markets. Prior to founding DecisionPath, Dr. Adler was a partner at CSC Consulting, an R&D executive at Symbiotics, Inc. and technical staff at MITRE and Control Data Corporation. He has published numerous encyclopedia articles, journal and conference papers on topics including homeland security, change management, knowledge management, intelligent systems, distributed computing, simulation, component technology, homeland security, and dynamic social networks.
