Telematics: Opportunities in Connected Vehicles

TiE-Boston Wireless & New Media SIG

Fueled by rapid consumer adoption of smartphones, the rollout of 4G/LTE solutions, and increasingly sophisticated automotive operating system, vehicle telematics is poised to grow. The market for vehicle device connectivity solutions will grow from 1,123M in 2009 to 5,016M units in 2017 in North America alone.

Automotive OEMs, Tier Suppliers, Wireless Carriers, Device Makers, and Third Party Applications Makers see an industry ready to transform. While Automotive OEMs have historically maintained somewhat adversarial relationships with Tier 1 Suppliers, the industry recognizes that it must shift and embrace more collaborative and more open relationships. Both Google & Microsoft are pushing hard their solutions to the telematics space. An industry where the barriers to entry were once massive, increased connectivity will allow start-ups to help shape the automotive industry.
