M2M & The Internet of Things

Many people have imagined for a long time the promise of a world in which machines of all types and sizes can autonomously communicate with each other. This is the world of the internet of things. GM’s OnStar business, which provides a growing range of in-vehicle services, has been around for more than a decade. But the past year has seen a surge of interest around the core enabling technology of the connected world: machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. Much of this interest stems from mobile operators, who are eagerly awaiting the possibility of connecting cars, homes, equipment, heart sensors and all manner of other devices to their networks to find new revenue sources. The M2M market is extremely diverse with business models spanning numerous vertical markets. From fixed/mobile assets such as oil/chemical tanks and shipping containers to connected medical devices to connected cars to connected buildings to a connected smart electrical grid, the business models across numerous verticals create both complexities in the fragmented M2M marketplace but also long-term growth opportunities. This TiE Boston event will provide a snapshot of how this ecosystem is evolving, identify some of the emerging companies, provide the perspectives of some established and entrepreneurial companies and emerging opportunities for new entrepreneurs.
