For a basic discussion on competitive intelligence and how it is accomplished, it may be useful to read Is Your Competitive Intelligence Focused on What Matters? by Jim DeLoach, a member of the Protiviti Solutions Leadership Team. His article is published on the Corporate Compliance Insights website.
For a review of why Competitive intelligence is key to develop the corporate innovation strategy, please take a look at Competitive Intelligence – Semantic Analysis by Pedro Guillen, managing partner at World Industrial Reporter. In this paper, he gives an example of how semantic analysis (identifying patterns among very large data sets), was able to complete an extremely detailed "competitor innovation strategy” based on public information.
